I have been reading “The 5 Minute Linguist” by Caroline Myrick and Walt Wolfram and it gets into details on linguists, for example, who linguists are and what they do. In my read so far, I have found the following 5 things interesting and would like to share with you:
- People who speak multiple languages are all polyglots.
- Since language is such a central aspect of being human, it is a necessary concern of other scientific fields that study human cognition and behavior. Therefore, interdisciplinary research is essential to understanding the language better.
- Psycholinguists study what goes on in our minds when we talk, read, or listen to someone else talking.
- Anthropological linguists study how culture is expressed in language, and how language impacts culture, they used to focus primarily on pre-industrial societies, but today may apply their skills and perspectives in any setting.
- Before the 1960s, language was generally considered a cultural phenomenon, so linguistics was a branch of anthropology.
